The Domain Year in Review

The year 2025 was a strong year for domain registrations. A total of 15,375 domains were newly registered, the highest number of new .is domain registrations in a single year since the beginning. The previous record was 14,825 new registrations in 2021.

A total of 11,134 domains were deleted during the year, resulting in a net increase of 4,241 domains in 2025. The total number of registered domains at year-end was 98,168. Of the new registrations, 57% were domestic and 43% foreign, while deletions were 54% domestic and 46% foreign. The net growth in domains was therefore 64% domestic and 36% foreign, although the overall distribution of registered .is domains is approximately 70% domestic and 30% foreign.

During the year, substantial investments were made in IT infrastructure. ISNIC’s data centers have now been upgraded with new hardware and equipment, further enhancing the security and reliability of the name service.

Internet á Íslandi hf. celebrated its 30th anniversary during the year, having been founded in May 1995. However, the history of .is domain registrations goes back even further. The first .is domain, hi.is, was registered in December 1986 and will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2026.

The year was marked by significant changes within the company. A change in ownership took place when SÍA IV slhf., a private equity fund managed by Stefnis and majority-owned by pension funds, acquired a majority stake in Internet á Íslandi hf. In addition, Jens Pétur Jensen stepped down during the year, having served as CEO since 2007.

ISNIC thanks its customers and .is domain holders for their business and trust during the past year and looks forward to entering the company’s 31st year with security, reliability, and trust as guiding principles.

Thor Jensen,
CEO.
